Since 1997, The First Tee, an international golf and wellness organization for youths, has impacted the lives of over 10 million children. The organization has nearly 200 chapters, spanning all 50 states, and close to 1,000 participating golf facilities. The organization’s goals go well beyond providing educational golf programs for children as demonstrated by their mission statement; “To impact the lives of young people by providing educational programs that build character, instill life-enhancing values and promote healthy choices through the game of golf.”
The strength of the organization, which has lead to its exuberant growth, can be attributed to its major founding partners, PGA of America, LPGA, and the U.S. Golf Association, to name a few, pumping extensive resources into the program from the beginning. The program is so prestigious that former President George W. Bush serves as Honorary Chair to the program who succeeded his father, the program’s founding Honorary Chair.
The organization goes beyond teaching kids the golf swing by emphasizing core values that are inherent in the game of golf throughout the program. The focus of the program is to teach junior golfers how to manage emotions, set goals, resolve conflicts, and communicate with others. There are, conveniently, 18 total life values and healthy habits the program emphasizes. These life values range from Healthy Habits including Safety, Vision, Mind, Family, and Community to Core Values such as Honesty, Integrity, Perseverance, Confidence, and Courtesy. The emphasis on life values set the organization apart by encompassing the program with benefits that go well beyond golf training.
The program has already found success well beyond the tee. Independent research conducted on The First Tee participants found that 73% had higher confidence in their ability to perform academic work, 82% felt more confident in their social skills, 57% credited the organization for their meeting skills, 52% credited the organization for their ability to appreciate diversity, and 100% of respondents identified school as a place where they transferred life skills learned at The First Tee.
Clearly, The First Tee has proven itself a great transformer within communities, and the benefits it offers to youth are life-altering. If you have a junior golfer, The First Tee would be a great organization to be involved with to teach them not only the fundamentals of golf, but also the fundamentals of life.
